All of us have decisions that cause us worry. Sometimes the decision is very
complex with many alternatives and factors to consider. Often we already know
what we want, but feel a need to verify or validate our hunch.
DecisionPlanner gives you powerful tools to help you arrive at the best
solution.
Paired Rankings
Studies show that people have an easier time indicating a preference between two alternatives than they do ranking a list of
alternatives. The Paired Rankings process is a valuable technique which will
show you every combination of your alternatives, two at a time. IT asks you to
vote your preference and DecisionPlanner keeps track of your votes. The
alternative with the highest number of picks is the winner. This is the method
to use if you have many decision makers that have to choose from many
alternatives.
Pro / Con Analysis
Each factor in your decision can be classified as a pro or a con. For example,
if you are choosing a house, the factor "Landscaping" might be a pro for house
A, but a con for house B. Indicate which factors are pros or cons for each
alternative. DecisionPlanner will keep track and provide a ranking of the
alternatives based on the number of pros compared to the number of cons. This
method is good when there are many factors to be considered, but a deep
analytical approach would be too time consuming.
Analytical Approach
The analytical method defines a target value and rank for each factor. Assign
actual values for each target for each of your alternatives. For example, if you
want to rank, from 1 to 5, the student living facilities for the colleges you
are considering your target could be 4 - you want above average, but don't need
the very best. Enter the actual value for each of the colleges you are
considering. DecisionPlanner compares the actual value to the target value,
considers the factor’s rank and assigns it a score. The alternative with the
highest score is the winner.
Survey / Score Method
Answer a series of questions and DecisionPlanner will tell you the best choice.
This method uses a model from the DecisionPlanner gallery. As you answer the
questions, DecisionPlanner is "keeping score" behind the scenes and will choose
the best alternative based on your score.
Decision Tree Method
A decision tree is similar to the survey / score method except that
multiple alternatives may exist at any stage. Each answer can lead to a
different branch of the tree and different alternatives. This method uses a
model from the DecisionPlanner gallery, utilizing the expertise of the modeler.
